When did we stop having girlfriends?

It seems that Australians refer to their current romantic interest as their partner.

In my time, partner was the word used for homosexual boyfriend or girlfriend if you didn’t want the conversation to go further.

I can see how the political correctness of the the word girlfriend might be questioned, but I think that referring to her as my partner doesn’t sound right either.
